one of the most original movies I've ever seen (up there with 300, Memento, and Match Point)

From an artistic and technical standpoint, "Cloverfield" is, hands down, one of the best movies I've ever seen. If one of the goals of a movie is to fool you into beleiving what you're seeing is real, then CF is a resounding success.

Yes, the movie ends on a note of hope, but it is a single note in a symphony of destruction and terror. If anything, the impression I got from the movie was a nihilistic one; there is no closure, no happy ending, no "don't worry, they beat it in the end." The human voices of love are tiny and insignificant against the tides of fate and blind chance.

I've decided to see it again; we'll have to see if my reaction is the same the second time around.
