In the midst of all this hoo-hah over cover-ups and Anna Nicole Smith having three baby daddies - Timmy Brister and Larry Miller have offered up very different takes on Ms. Smith's death.
Like Brister (any relation to Bubby?), I've thought a couple of times about how we view the Anna Nicoles, the Britneys, the Paris' of this alternate universe known as celebrity and they become cultural pariahs and outcasts just like the woman in John 4. I was reminded that one of the great tragedies in a world that has made a mint over the obsessive exploitation with women's bodies is that we forget that these are people we're ogling at. We're attracted to exhibitionist behavior (whether it be in porn or reality TV) because it's abnormal - abnormality caused in no small part because the pains of life led to some foolish and tragic decisions.
Miller's article on Anna Nicole as a person was sad and poignant. It's the story of people who never found their true Father and are desperate for love and acceptance that remind us of the compelling nature of the gospel which speaks into the very depths of what led someone like Anna Nicole to wander and wander, searching for something that could only be found in Christ.
