I was reading a blog post this morning lamenting the fact that our culture's use of the Scriptures as a grenade as we do life together has made him sick of the Bible, at times causing physical anger and nausea. Pretty serious stuff - and I get it because I think that no small percentage of Christians functionally ignore what they know to be true - the Scriptures are not an apologetic for a particular flavor of creationism or education or various asundry things that all of us can read into the pages of the Bible. The Scriptures are about Jesus - a fact that we cognitively know but set aside far too often to prove that our lifestyle is THE way to go about the business of life.
This guy's not alone - and that's why I'm posting this (and why I hope that no one gets offended if some of what I write doesn't fit their situation - I'm not directing any of this towards any one person or group of people). I know more than a few people who have grown perturbed at the bastardization of the scriptures and have responded by simply setting the scriptures aside. Because we can't get along and because the source of offense appears to be this thing called the Bible, let's purge ourselves of the cancer and live free of the carcinogen of the scriptures. By doing so, we're now free to pursue Jesus without all of this other stuff getting in the way.
