For all of McLaren’s efforts to create dialogue, it is his continued insistence to polarize where Scripture does not allow us to polarize that leaves the reader holding a work that creates hunger without providing the meal to satisfy our craving to follow Jesus. There is no doubt that there is a missional bent throughout the New Testament – one could even state that it is impossible to consider oneself a follower of Jesus unless we join in living out this mission and its message. McLaren and I are in agreement on that point – what I think he has missed (and missed badly) is the holistic content of that message.
