For the past several years, Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis has been running what they call The Bethlehem Institute (TBI), which is a seminary-level environment for persons at the church and others considering vocational ministry to learn and be equipped by a number of instructors, including the pastor of BBC, John Piper.
Last week, I came across the ministry of BiblicalTraining.org, an organization whose purpose is similar to our mission at Christ Church - to equip God's people for the work of ministry. They have received endorsements from JI Packer as well as Luder Whitlock (former president at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson) and offer a number of classes that look to be both rich and helpful. All the lectures are online and the classes are free, except for the books which you'll need to purchase.
One of the classes listed is a course in Practical Theology that uses some of Piper's lectures from TBI. I have heard all of these at some point and time and see this collection of lectures as a fantastic way to grow deeper in your faith and to become better equipped to play your part in 'treasuring Jesus and transforming the world.' You can look at the course syllabus here (it is rigorous, but again, well worth your time and energy). I don't agree with everything that John says in these lectures, but most of my disagreements are minor in nature. If you've been looking for something to give yourself to as 2006 approaches, I would very much commend this to you. If you don't think you can afford the books, let me know and we'll try to help you out.
