This Sunday, we begin a new series of sermons entitled Treasuring Christ with Our Treasure, the first of three series that are designed to help us apply the message of Hebrews to our lives. As we’ve studied the first four chapters of this letter, the theme that has bubbled to the surface is a call to trust and treasure Jesus Christ in all of life. The writer of Hebrews is clear in his declaration that Jesus is infinitely valuable and that we must take great care to not neglect him and the salvation he provides on our behalf.
Treasuring Christ with Our Treasure is an effort to conform our lives to God’s perspective regarding how we understand and use the financial resources and possessions which God has blessed us with. It is surprising to me how reticent many churches are to address issues related to money and wealth, often because of fear that is the result of anticipating the negative reaction such an emphasis would cause in the life of a congregation. Make no mistake about it, there is no subject that Christians can address that causes more wide-spread angst, anxiety and anger than issues related to our finances and possessions.
